Ilene Carpenter’s two books about American Indian children were written during and soon after her sabbatical year in 1970-1971. She spent much of that year living on reservations across the United States, learning first-hand about life on those reservations and developing long-lasting friendships.
Ilene started as a high school teacher, but spent most of her career teaching elementary school in Southern California. It is little wonder that other elementary teachers appreciate these books as valuable tools for their classrooms, to show today’s children a slice of family and community life for children nearly 30 years ago on two reservations -- one in North Carolina and one in Arizona.
Parents also appreciate both the innocence and the emphasis on the importance of family life shown in these books.
