With the eLessons mailing list, Lessons to Share: workbook for a healthy family has become a living dialogue on the Internet. Get the book that started it all. Note: After nine active years, the list is currently in hiatus. The book, however, is available.

Excerpt from “Birth of the Idea” in Lessons to Share:

"What do you do with your children?"
"Why are they the nifty kids they are?"
"What do you do differently from everybody else?"

A week never goes by without these questions. For years, I just shrugged. Today I'm writing it down....

What I do with my children is to love them, want them, enjoy them, respect them even when we disagree drastically, listen to them, and ask them questions to which I expect answers. Their answers. Definitely not mine. I encourage them to be who they are....

Yet I get requests for a workbook. Directions! "How to Build Chas' Children." Step by step.

No, the book did not turn out to be How to Build Chas' Children, Part One: Primordial Soup. Rather it is a fascinating look into the way one family works and plays, feels and thinks, gives and takes, shares and communicates. It is also a splendid illumination of the differences in philosophy between children and adults of different ages. Its unique question-and-answer format makes it easy to read anything from a few paragraphs to the whole book at a time. Since the questions are universal, you and your family can provide your own answers to gain valuable insights into the minds and emotions of those around you (including yourself). Many people planning reunions or other family gatherings have used this book as a way to get to know far-flung friends and family much better.
