Excerpt from the Introduction to The Turnip Mercedes and Other Tasty Tales:
I love to write stories. Anything can trigger a story – a busy day in the desert generated a letter to a friend living across the country that was renamed Just Another Saturday; a letter irritated me into writing Is $16.25 Worth a Lie? before arguing with the school officials; an overheard conversation sparked Cages Disguised as Bridges; a college professor who staggered on very high heels became a temp in The Turnip Mercedes; a holiday reminded me of my Granddaddy; and thousands of other trivial and earth-shattering events and thoughts through the years have become stories. Lest my imagination get too worn out, some of these tales are of moments that were experienced, not invented. Then, too, I’m an opinionated sort. I write opinions, in and out of stories. Growing up, I learned to think best with a fountain pen in my hand. Looking back, I’ve always been able to be amazed, horrified or entertained by thoughts from this instant or last week, last year or 20 years ago....
